05-A: Adjectives (Comparisons)

Adjectives

describe words. They belong to the category of „changeable types of words“
 and they are used in different ways, one of which is

    to compare things and people:

     Das Haus ist klein.                       = That house is small.                    (Basic form)
     Das Haus ist kleiner.                   = That house is smaller.                (Comparative)  + …er
     Das Haus ist am kleinsten.      = That house is the smallest.     (Superlative )   + …sten
     Das kleinste Haus der Welt.    = The smallest house in the world.  (Superlative –  attributive)  + …ste

   When we learn new Adjectives it is useful to learn the Comparative and the Superlative as well:

Adjective  + Comparative  ++ Superlative  +++
  Adjective   +   -er am  +  Adjective  +  -sten
klein (small) kleiner am  kleinsten
teuer (expensive) teurer am  teuersten
dick (thick) dicker am  dicksten
nett (nice) netter am  nettesten
schwer (heavy) schwerer am  schwersten

Exceptions:

1. Vowels in monosyllabic Adjectives change froma = ä;o = ö;u = ü

2. Some Adjectives (more than given here) are irregular

Adjective   + Comparative  ++ Supertalive  +++
1. jung (young) jünger am jüngsten
    lang (long) länger am längsten
2.  gut (good) besser
am  besten
     viel (many) mehr
am  meisten
